The facts as currently known
to us:
· The operating company of the proposed wind farm is United
Utilities.
· The proposed site is in Swansea Bay, 5 km off Sker point.
· The maximum area - 10km².
· The number of turbines proposed - 30.
· The dimensions of the turbines - calculated as a mean from
the surface of the sea (taking differing tide levels into account),
the distance of the surface to the hub will be about 85 metres. Adding
52 metres (for the largest possible blade available at the moment)
gives a total height from the sea surface to
the top of the blade of 133 metres. United Utilities give a total
'working figure' height of 135 metres.
· Construction - the turbines are to be anchored in concrete
gravity caisson foundations which will rest on the seabed.
· The construction operation will be based in Port Talbot.
· Electricity will be fed into the local distribution grid,
not the National grid.
· A lease for the site has already been signed with the Crown
Estates. For this reason the siting of the wind farm cannot be reconsidered
by United Utilities.
